MANILA, Philippines — The main crater of the Taal Volcano had a “weak to voluminous” emission of white to dirty steam laden plumes 800 meters high in the past 24 hours, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said Tuesday.

In its 8 a.m. bulletin, Phivolcs added that the emission of sulfur dioxide emission was described as “below instrumental detection.”

Since 5 a.m Monday until 5 a.m. Tuesday, Phivolcs added that the Philippine Seismic Network (PSN) recorded three volcanic earthquakes that registered at magnitudes 1.5 to 2.2.

Alert Level 3 is still in effect, which means that “steam-driven and even weak phreatomagmatic explosions, volcanic earthquakes, ashfall, and lethal volcanic gas expulsions can still occur and threaten areas within Taal Volcano Island and nearby lakeshore.”

“DOST-Phivolcs recommends that entry into the Taal Volcano Island as well as into areas over Taal Lake and communities west of the island within a seven-kilometer radius from the main crater must be strictly prohibited,” the bulletin read.
