The House of Representatives Electoral Tribunal (HRET) has upheld the victory of Northern Samar Rep. Paul Daza in the May 2019 congressional race by dismissing the electoral protest of former Rep. Harlin Abayon.
In a Dec. 12 decision made public on Jan. 15, the nine-member tribunal chaired by Supreme Court Associate Justice Marvic Leonen ruled against Abayon who had accused Daza of vote buying in five of 14 municipalities in the first district.
Daza, the former governor of Northern Samar who succeeded his father, former Rep. Raul Daza, was proclaimed winner by a margin of 59,685 votes. —DJ YAP
