MANILA, Philippines — A 17-year-old boy was killed while his companion, who is also a minor, was hurt after their motorcycle figured in an accident in Pasay City early Saturday morning.

A report from the Pasay City police said Raizaldy De Paz Macias was driving the motorcycle with a 16-year-old boy as his passenger when the motorcycle hit a bump along Leveriza Street in Barangay 22 at about 12:30 a.m.

Police said Macias then lost control of the motorcycle, which then crashed into an electric post.  Police said the two boys were not wearing crash helmets when the crash happened.

According to police, the victims sustained serious injuries and were rushed to a nearby hospital by elements of the Arnaiz police community precinct. Macias later died in the hospital while his 16-year-old victim is still recovering at the hospital.

Republic Act No. 10666 or Children’s Safety on Motorcycle Act of 2015 prohibits motorcycle riders from having minors as passengers. The law also reminds that children may be allowed as back ride passengers only if they could reach the footpeg of the motorcycle. Minors must also wear protective helmet when riding motorcycles.
