MANILA, Philippines — More than 40,000 people have been displaced from their homes following Sunday’s eruption of Taal Volcano, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said Wednesday.

A total of 10,000 families or 43,681 persons were staying in 217 evacuation centers in Batangas, Cavite and Laguna, the NDRRMC said in its bulletin.

The disaster management agency also recorded 53,019 persons affected from the volcano’s activities in previous days.

The Department of Social Welfare and Development has provided more than P2 million worth of assistance to affected families across Calabarzon, the NDRRMC said.

Taal Volcano remained at Alert Level 4 on Wednesday, meaning that a “hazardous” eruption may occur “within hours to days.”
