MANILA, Philippines — More than 7,700 individuals were evacuated to temporary shelters following the eruption of Taal Volcano on Sunday.
As of 6 a.m. Monday, a report by the National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (NDRRMC) said 7,742 individuals or 966 families are sheltered in 38 evacuation centers.
The displaced families were from San Nicolas, Talisay, Tanauan City, Mataas na Kahoy, Balete, Lipa City, and Laurel in Batangas; and Tagaytay City in Cavite, NDRRMC said.
At 10 p.m. Sunday, NDRRMC said the Talisay-Tagaytay Road in CALABARZON was temporarily closed due to the evacuation of the residents.
A phreatic eruption, or a steam-driven episode that occurs when water beneath the ground or on the surface is heated by magma, lava, hot rocks, or new volcanic deposits, occured at Taal Volcano’s crater Sunday afternoon.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) earlier raised Alert Level 4 over Taal Volcano which means a hazardous explosion may occur within hours or days.
Ash fall from Taal reached nearby provinces and Metro Manila forcing cancellation of classes and work suspension of government offices in affected areas.
