ROME — An explosion caused by a man setting off fireworks in his apartment on New Year’s Eve destroyed a residential building in Rome, killing him and injuring several other occupants, including a child.
Rome Mayor Gianni Alemanno told Sky TG24 TV Sunday that the fatality was known to police for dealing in illegal fireworks. The explosion destroyed the small apartment building.
Police across Italy said dozens of celebrants were injured by fireworks, including several who lost fingers or eyes, and a man whose hand was amputated.
In Naples a man was shot and killed outside his restaurant Saturday night, and authorities were trying to determine if it was a stray shot fired by a celebrant or a local mobster attack.
