DOH: Reported injuries from fireworks rise to 288

MANILA, Philippines — Reported injuries caused by fireworks has gone up to 288, the Department of Health (DOH) reported Thursday.

In its fireworks-related injury surveillance report, DOH said 124 additional cases for fireworks-related injuries were reported since its last update on New Year’s Day with only 164 cases.

The total number of cases recorded from December 21, 2019, to January 2, 2020, is 25 cases or eight percent lower compared to the same period last year.

DOH said the injuries were all due to fireworks, and no stray bullet injuries or firework ingestion cases have been reported. There also have been no reported deaths.

Of the 288 cases, the most number of reported injuries with 143 cases came from the National Capital Region (NCR) followed by Region VI with 29 and Region I with 26.

Meanwhile, 172 or 60 percent of the injuries were caused by legal fireworks, 63 of which due to kwitis, and 32 each due to fountain and luces.

Prohibited firecrackers like piccolo and triangle caused 17 and 13 injuries, respectively. #
