IBP president: Attaining peace, justice is everyone’s mission

MANILA, Philippines — A mission of peace and justice is not only for those who wield power or authority but should be a mission for everyone, the Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP) through its National President Domingo Egon Cayosa said in a New Year’s Day message.

“May 2020 start a decade of clearer visions, realized objectives, and a bit of heroism in every lawyer and in every citizen,” he said.

The mandatory organization of lawyers with over 50,000 members said pressing problems in the country such as insurgency wars, recurring political and extrajudicial killings remain unsolved for over half a century. Cayosa said they are hoping that the new decade will put an end to the past decade’s problems.

The organization pointed out the importance of sincerity and goodwill “to move beyond peace-talks to peace-building.”

“It would be most helpful if the socio-economic and structural reforms that truly address corruption, criminality, poverty, and injustice in our country are resolutely pursued,” Cayosa said.

The IBP also renewed its commitment to the rule of law and “justice bilis.”

“We thank all those who made it possible for us to be faithful sentinels of the rule of law,” he said.

“By being more efficient, transparent, accountable and in partnership and collaboration with others, we were able to do more, better, and faster at IBP,” he added.
