Wayward van crashes into Christmas party; kills 2 in QC

MANILA, Philippines — Two women died as a wayward van crashed into a Christmas party in Barangay San Jose, Quezon City on Monday night, police said.

A report from the Quezon City Police District Traffic Enforcement Unit identified the fatalities as Elena Baga, 32, and Zenaida Zamora, 65.

According to police, a Toyota Innova was traversing Mauban Street when it suddenly veered right at Tinagan Street to the party venue at about 6:30 p.m., eventually ramming the victims before hitting a jeepney parked nearby.

Six others were injured from the incident.

The victims were brought to different hospitals but Baga and Zamora were declared dead on arrival.

Police said the driver of the vehicle, identified as Edmund Sumundong, did not have a driver’s license and was only being taught to drive by his companion named Jesie Balambao.

Both of them were believed to be under the influence of liquor during the incident, police said.

Further investigation is ongoing.
