MANILA, Philippines — Amid the guilty verdict meted on the powerful Ampatuan clan of Maguindanao, several congressmen have renewed calls to end the so-called “culture of impunity.”
“Today, impunity has ended. The victims’ cry for justice has been answered. As we celebrate the bravery and wisdom of Judge Jocelyn Solis – Reyes, we must also continue to pray for her safety and the witnesses’ and families of the victims’ well being,” ACT-CIS Rep. Niña Taduran said on Thursday.
Taduran likewise urged the Philippine National Police to exhaust all means to bring to justice the 80 co-accused of the Ampatuans, who the Quezon City regional trial court had affirmed to be the mastermind behind the November 23, 2009 Maguindanao massacre.

“The outcome of the case should likewise warn those who abuse their power and commit grievous acts against the people, that despite the dragging and arduous process, justice still comes for them. Let us end this state of impunity that gives rise to warlordism, tyranny, and dictatorship in our history,” Zarate said.
Ako Bicol Rep. Alfredo Garbin Jr., for his part, said the verdict remains a challenge to Congress and all institutions and sectors “to protect all our freedoms with utmost strength, the full force of our laws, and the clear certainty of enforcement.”
“I see the need for much stronger voter education laws and programs, the eradication of private armies, confiscation of all loose firearms, stoppage of all sources of funds of lawless elements, and bans on criminals from any post in government,” he said.
Cavite 4th District Rep. Elpidio Barzaga Jr., on the other hand, considered the Maguindanao massacre decision as “an opportunity to redeem the trust of the people in the present justice system of the country.”
