A paramedic in Pakistan, supposedly feeling for her childless aunt, took away a newborn child to give to her.
Authorities arrested the healthcare specialist and her aunt together with two other accomplices, as per BBC World Service’s Urdu station yesterday Dec. 9.
Mother Jamila Bibi gave birth to twin baby girls last Wednesday, Dec. 4. Initially, the family was unaware of one of the babies’ disappearance because Bibi was in a semi-conscious state for the next few days, and was not able to say that she delivered twins.
Abdul Hamid, the man who took Bibi to the hospital, told police that Bibi’s family received one of the twin girls. After the baby was handed over, as per report, they were told to go home. A few days later, the baby girl in the family’s custody passed away.
“On Friday, when Bibi had recovered her senses, she asked where her other girl was. We were stunned,” Hamid was quoted as saying.
Hamid later filed a complaint which led to the arrest of the paramedic on duty, and eventually to that of the two other female accomplices, and the aunt who received the stolen baby. The paramedic’s aunt said she wanted to adopt a baby because she has been childless for years.
“She had been helped by two other colleagues to smuggle the baby out of [the] hospital and give it to her aunt who was married 17 years but was still without a child,” the head of Loralai police, Jahangir Shah said in the report.
The incident led police and medical officials to point out the lax conditions in the hospital, such as not requiring tags for both mothers and infants, and not implementing biometric registration at the hospital’s exit points.
