BAGUIO CITY – The Christmas season temperature in this nippy summer capital dropped to 11.8 degrees Celsius at 6 a.m. on Monday, the coldest morning so far this month.

Cooler mornings, however, are expected in the coming weeks as Baguio City’s coldest morning is usually recorded between January and February, said  Leticia Dispo, weather specialist of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration here.

The lowest temperature recorded here this year was 9.8 degrees Celsius on Jan. 28.

The lowest temperature ever recorded in the city was 6.3 degrees on January 18, 1961.

She said the cold spell is caused by the northeast monsoon locally known as “hanging amihan,” which starts blowing by October.
