MANILA, Philippines — The Commission on Elections (Comelec) plans to resume the registration of voters for the May 2022 national and local polls in January next year.
“That may come by January. So we still have a couple of weeks more to prepare for that,”Comelec spokesperson James Jimenez told reporters.
Jimenez expressed optimism that they would be able to get more people to register compared to the previous registration period.
“We have yet to come up with a target number. But we did surpass the last target that we set. Hopefully, we can have a higher number,”he added.
During the last voter registration period held from Aug. 1 to Sept. 30, applications from regular registrants or those age 18 years and above reached 3,082,396.
This is higher than the poll body’s earlier projected number of new regular registered voters of 2,030,630.
The poll body earlier said it would now focus on the May 2022 elections.
