Typhoon Kammuri, which will be called Tisoy, once it enters the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR), is not likely to become a supertyphoon, the state weather bureau said on Friday.

“The intensification of Kammuri into a supertyphoon is less likely at this time, but not ruled out,” the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said.

As of 4 p.m. on Friday, Kammuri was spotted 1,455 kilometers east of Southern Luzon.

It has maximum sustained winds of 140 kilometers per hour, and gustiness of up to 170 kph, while being almost stationary.

Pagasa also maintained its earlier forecast that the typhoon, which will be the 20th to hit the country this year, is expected to enter PAR by Saturday evening or Sunday morning.

Perez also said the typhoon was on track to make landfall somewhere in the Bicol Region on Tuesday, bringing with it heavy rain showers.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, the typhoon will likely bring heavy rains and thunderstorms over Southern and Central Luzon, including Metro Manila, where majority of the venues of the 30th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games will be held.
