Golfer stable, remains in hospital after shooting

Professional golfer Antonio “Ton” Asistio remains confined in a hospital days after he was shot by two unidentified assailants as he was having drinks with his friends in Marikina City before midnight on Monday.

Supt. Danilo Macerin, deputy chief of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group-National Capital Region, said they learned about the shooting only the following day after they received a phone call.

By that time, the 22-year-old victim was already in the hospital, he added.

The attempt on Asistio’s life took place at around 11:30 p.m. on Monday in front of his house at New Marikina Heights Subdivision in Barangay San Roque, Marikina City.

On Wednesday, police investigators visited the victim to question him but they were turned away because his condition remains unstable.

Asistio sustained gunshot wounds in the left eye and upper back.

Thursday afternoon, he was set to undergo surgery after his condition was upgraded to stable, the police told the Inquirer.

Initial investigation showed that the victim and three of his friends were drinking in front of his house when two men suddenly showed up and shot him twice before fleeing.

Macerin said investigators needed to question Asistio to get a description of his attackers because the other witnesses did not see the gunmen clearly.

He added that it was too early to determine the motive for the shooting as investigators were still gathering clues

“It may not be robbery because nothing valuable was taken from him. [The motive may be] personal,” he said.
