04:00 AM November 27, 2019

National Biotechnology Week is observed every last week of November by virtue of Proclamation No. 1414 signed on Nov. 9, 2007, by then President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

According to the proclamation, it is the policy of the government to promote safe and responsible use of modern biotechnology and its products as one of several means to achieve and sustain food security, equitable access to health services, a sustainable and safe environment, and industry development.

The National Biotechnology Week committee tasked to come up with a program for marking the occasion is composed of the secretaries of the Departments of Agriculture, Science and Technology, Health, Environment and Natural Resources, Trade and Industry, the Interior and Local Government, and Education. —Marielle Medina, Inquirer Research
