According to the Department of Health, there were 1,107 deaths due to dengue nationwide from Jan. 1 to Aug. 31 this year. The fatality rate was 113 percent higher compared to the 655 deaths recorded during the same period in 2018. The regions with the highest number of deaths were Western Visayas with 201, Calabarzon with 124, and Central Visayas with 97. Metro Manila recorded 93 deaths due to dengue. —Marielle Medina, Inquirer Research
