Drowned boy found in Mandaue

THE body of the boy who was carried away by the strong current of the Butuanon River in Mandaue City during Tuesday’s downpour  was found yesterday in Pier 8 of the  North Reclamation Area in Mandaue City.

A crewman from one of the boats docked in the area saw the floating body of 7-year-old John Lloyd Canete, at  6 a.m.   and retrieved it.

John Lloyd’s body was turned over to relatives.

The boy went  for a swim in the Butuanon River on Tuesday afternoon.

He jumped into the river and was carried away by the current.

Canete was raised by his grandparents in barangay Maguikay after his mother left him and his two siblings when their father died five years ago.

In barangay Paknaan, Mandaue City, a concrete fence collapsed, destroying 11 houses beside the Butuanon River in sitio Mongos.

None of the 13 families were injured when the wall of Galva Phil. Corp. collapsed on their houses.

Barangay captain Malaquias Soco said the affected families were earlier advised to leave the area.

They all transfer to the barangay gym since their houses were within the three-meter easement zone of the river.

He said the 13 families asked for financial assistance so that they could go home to the provinces.

Soco said he would discuss this with Galva Phil. officials.

In Lapu-Lapu City, the flood helped two political rivals in the last May election set aside their differences to help affected residents.

Basak barangay captain Isabelo Darnayla, who ran and lost to incumbent Mayor Paz Radaza in the last elections, agreed to help Radaza in giving assistance to the flood victims housed in the evacuation centers at the Basak barangay hall, Basak Elementary School and Sudtongan Elementary School.

About  130 families are staying in the evacuation centers.

Radaza said she would allot P30 million for the improvement of the drainage system in barangay Basak.

In Talisay City yesterday, relief goods were distributed to flood victims by the city’s social welfare office.
