MANILA, Philippines — Philippine National Police (PNP) officer-in-charge Lt. Gen. Archie Gamboa said Wednesday that the police force might recommend the extension of martial law in select areas in Mindanao.
“Generally yes, but there is still ongoing assessment on the part of the PNP baka pwedeng maging selective. [maybe it should be selective],” Gamboa told reporters in Camp Crame when asked if the PNP will recommend the 4th extension of martial law in Mindanao.
Gamboa noted that the PNP is for the “discontinuance” of martial law extension “except on other areas where there is high terrorist threats.”
Asked which areas in Mindanao will have the extension, Gamboa responded: “We will not preempt it kasi gusto ko may proper evaluation. [ because I want to have a proper evaluation].”
On May 23, 2017, President Rodrigo Duterte issued Proclamation No. 216, which placed Mindanao under martial law after Islamic State-inspired Maute Group clashed with government forces in Marawi City, Lanao del Sur.
Under the proclamation, the military rule was effective for 60 days but Duterte was successful in asking Congress to extend it thrice. /jpv
