26 houses, 58 fishing boats ravaged as tidal wave slams Mindoro coastal town
CITY OF CALAPAN – A five-meter tidal wave spawned by Typhoon “Quiel” crushed 26 houses and damaged 50 others in the coastal villages of Paluan in Occidental Mindoro, a local disaster official said Saturday.
The giant waves struck the shoreline of 10 to 12 villages in Paluan, a town in the north-western tip of Mindoro island, said Edward Emmanuel Yambao of the municipal disaster risk and reduction management office.
A total of 58 motorized bancas were totally damaged, Yambao told the Inquirer.
Residents numbering 11,962 were affected by the typhoon, he said, adding that 620 individuals were forced to evacuate their homes and take shelter in schools and barangay halls.
“As of this morning (Saturday), they have all returned to their homes,” said Yambao.
