MANILA, Philippines — The National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) called on the Philippine National Police (PNP) to swiftly resolve the cases of other media killings in the Philippines.
“We urge the leadership of the Philippine National Police to require the same diligence and swift action in resolving the scores of other media killings in the country,” NUJP said in a statement on Friday following the arrest of two suspects in the Nov. 7 killing of Dumaguete City broadcaster Dindo Generoso.
NUJP also urged PNP to conduct an honest probe into the suspected role of law enforcers and other state security forces in the murder of members of the press.
Teddy Reyes Salaw and retired policemen Glenn Corsamein, two of the three suspects in Generoso’s slay, were taken under police custody.
Police said the alleged gunman, Roger Rubio, is an active policeman assigned at the 2nd Mobile Force Company in Guihulngan City. Rubio is still at large.
The media organization said two policemen as suspected killers are a “cause for concern” and “reinforces the findings of informal studies by media organizations that tend to indicate the involvement of state security personnel in many journalists’ murders in the country.”
