Police identify gunman in Dumaguete City radioman’s slay

MANILA, Philippines — Police have identified the gunman in the murder of a radio broadcaster in Dumaguete City.

Brig. Gen. Valeriano De Leon, Central Visayas police chief, said investigators already have the name of the suspect. Police however requested that the identity and background of the gunman not be disclosed as a hot pursuit operation is ongoing.

Two other suspects, a certain Teddy Reyes Salaw and Glenn Corsame — a retired policeman — were arrested by the police Thursday afternoon, just hours after the killing of victim Dindo Genereso.

According to police, Corsame is allegedly the driver of the motorcycle used in the murder, while Salaw is the driver of the Mitsubishi Strada pick-up and also allegedly acted as the “spotter.”

Generoso was onboard his Hyundai Elantra on his way to work when he was shot dead in Barangay Piapi. He succumbed to eight gunshot wounds on his head and body.

Police said the gunman was inside the pick-up parked a few kilometers from the crime scene. When he saw the victim approaching, he alighted from the vehicle and transferred to the motorcycle driven by Salaw.

De Leon suspects that the killing could be highly-related to the victim’s work as a broadcaster. He said other possible angles could be politics or a land dispute.

“Kahit sino [tinitira] (He comments against anyone), even bigman politicians,” he told INQUIRER.net.

Generoso, reportedly a hard-hitting broadcaster in his commentaries, joined the mayoral race  in 2016 but was declared a nuisance candidate.

He was also representing his family in a land dispute case, reportedly negotiating with another party regarding their land to be used for commercial purposes.  /muf
