MANILA, Philippines — The Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) is poised to expedite the clean-up of lahar-clogged rivers in the country.
MGB Director Atty. Wilfredo G. Moncano said Wednesday that new dredging policies under Department Administrative Order (DAO) No. 2018-23 will be implemented with the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to hasten cleaning operations by speeding up the processing of applications for dredging permits.
“The new guidelines delineate the jurisdiction of each department as it relates to dredging,” Moncano said in a statement.
“River cleanups, for example, are under the DENR. Construction-related dredging falls under the DPWH. The MGB comes in when there is intent to distribute dredged silts and materials commercially,” he added.
Moncano also assured the public that safe dredging policies will be implemented in order to protect not only people but the environment as well.
“At the end of the day, environmental protection and river restoration are the top priorities along with the safety of the local community,” Moncano said. /kga
