LEGAZPI CITY –– The City Veterinary Office here held some 1,508 pork canned products on Monday after these were found to be tampered and banned.

Dr. Emmanuel Estipona, chief of the CVO, said members of Task Force African swine fever (ASF) made a surprise inspection to two big supermarkets and a local distributor of canned products here.

During the inspection, they found that these supermarkets and distributors displayed, delivered, and sold processed canned pork products from Vietnam.

Estipona said the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) recently banned processed canned pork products from Vietnam because these might be contaminated with ASF.

He said they were checking the products, making sure no misrepresentation or mislabeling was done to protect the consumers.

The products would undergo testing under the FDA and if found contaminated with ASF, would be confiscated and burned./lzb
