MRT-3 train emits smoke; 530 passengers unloaded

MANILA, Philippines — One of the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3) trains reportedly emitted smoke on Monday afternoon that resulted in the unloading of passengers from the train.

In an advisory on Monday, the MRT-3 said that a total of 530 passengers were offloaded from the train at the Santolan Station after it threw out smoke at 4:08 p.m.

At 4:30 p.m., the MRT-3 cut its trips from Shaw Boulevard station to Taft Avenue due to the incident, with only seven rains running.

As of writing, the MRT-3 is still ascertaining the cause of the train’s defect.

“Rest assured that our rehabilitation and maintenance provider, Sumitomo-Mitsubishi Heavy, will conduct a thorough investigation regarding this incident, and implement measures to prevent this from happening again,” MRT-3 said in a statement.

The management has yet to give more details if there was anyone hurt from the incident.

Photos shared obtained by INQUIRER.net showed that the build-up of queues at the North Avenue station as of 4:22 p.m. as passengers wait to be serviced by the train line.

They were eventually told to take alternative modes of transportation as trips will only be from Shaw station to Taft.
