Suicide in Alcoy
A 44-year-old farmer was found hanging dead inside his shack in  Alcoy, south Cebu, yesterday morning.
Venancio Anoba was discovered by his 84-year-old mother Mercedes with a rope tied around his neck and the other end tied to  the ceiling beam.
Mercedes told police that last Monday afternoon,  Venancio was drunk and said he would commit suicide.
Mercedes said the farmer never confided his problems to her and had tried kill himself twice before but she was able to stop him. /RHEA RUTH V. ROSELL

Nozzle taping

To prevent indiscriminate firing during the New Year’s Eve revelry,  policemen in Cebu City taped the nozzles of their service firearms yesterday.
The annual safety measure in Camp Sergio Osmeña was led by Supt. Mercelo Garbo, chief of Police Regional Office (PRO-7) and was conducted simultaneously with  other  police offices nationwide.
A rookie policeman said he was was happy with the tradition because they are always blamed for stray bullets during Christmas and New Year’s Eve celebrations.

Officer charged
Homicide charges were filed in court against a police officer who shot dead a man after responding to an alarm in barangay Bacayan, Cebu City.
PO2 Rodel Abejuela shot dead  Jose Ligario, who was chasing a woman with a bladed weapon last Dec. 23.
Thelma Omboy said she saw the  policeman shoot Ligario when  he sensed that his life was in danger. /ADOR VINCENT S. MAYOL
