MANILA, Philippines — President Rodrigo Duterte could take “drastic action” against water concessionaires over the imminent water crisis in Metro Manila and nearby provinces, Malacañang said Monday.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said that a water crisis looms as the water level in Angat Dam continues to recede.
“I suppose the fact that they have not undertaken corrective measures that will prevent the evolution of this upcoming crisis again would be a factor that would make the President decide on drastic action against them,” presidential spokesperson Salvador Panelo said in a Palace briefing.
“If indeed they have not done anything despite the fact that there was a crisis before and now it is being repeated again, then the President may consider that factor,” Panelo added.
Panelo said concerned agencies “obviously” did not do enough to address the water shortage.
“Otherwise, there would not be a looming crisis,” he said.
Asked to elaborate about the possible drastic action of Duterte, Panelo said the President could make those concerned officials “accountable.”
“Make them accountable as suggested by the three senators,” he said, referring to Senators Imee Marcos, Francis Tolentino, and Christopher “Bong” Go.
“Well, the message again is shape up or ship out. That has always been the message of the President. If you cannot do it, then leave,” he added. /kga
