DID YOU KNOW: 145th birth anniversary of Rafael Palma

Today, Oct. 24, is the 145th birth anniversary of statesman, educator and historian Rafael Palma.

Born in 1874 in Tondo, Manila, Palma joined the La Independencia, the official newspaper of the revolution, and founded the El Renacimiento.

He later entered politics and was elected an assemblyman, then as a senator.

In 1917, he was also appointed to the Cabinet as interior secretary.

He also served as president of the University of the Philippines from 1925 to 1933. He died on May 24, 1939. —Marielle Medina, Inquirer Research
