2 killed, 4 wounded including cop, reporter in shooting in Antique

ILOILO CITY—Two persons died and four others including two policemen and a reporter were wounded in a shooting incident at the capital town of San Jose in Antique Monday morning.

Police arrested the suspected gunman Venom Dio who was wounded after he was pursued and shot by policemen, according to Lt. Col. Mark Darroca, San Jose police chief.

Darroca identified the fatalities as Ana Anacleto, 24, and Erven James Checa, 32. The wounded included Staff Sergeants Cyril Valdevieso Albert Talidong and Stephen Checa, a correspondent of the Iloilo-based newspaper Panay News and brother of Erven.

Citing results of an initial investigation, Darroca said Dio, who owns a water refilling station, had an altercation with Erven who managed an adjacent computer shop.

Stephen had reported to the San Jose police station that Dio was brandishing a gun at his brother.

But when policemen arrived at the shop, Dio had already shot the siblings and Anacleto and also engaged the policemen in a shootout using a 9 mm handgun, Darroca said.

The suspected gunman suffered minor wounds in the leg and has been detained at the San Jose police station.

The other wounded were taken to the Angel Salazar Memorial General Hospital in San Jose for treatment.
