Korean teacher wanted for fraud arrested in PH

MANILA, Philippines — A Korean teacher wanted for swindling two compatriots in Seoul, South Korea was arrested in the Philippines, the Bureau of Immigration (BI) said Sunday.

The Korean national, identified as 49-year-old Kim Sang Wook, was arrested last Oct. 15 in Malate, Manila in an operation conducted by the bureau’s Fugitive Search Unit (FSU) following the request of the South Korean Embassy in Manila.

Kim allegedly swindled 100 million won by promising his victims’ sons of employment as teachers before fleeing to Manila on February 2015 under a tourist visa.

The FSU chief, intelligence officer Bobby Raquepo, said that an arrest warrant was issued on Kim by a Korean court, aside from a red notice from the Interpol.

Kim is detained at the BI Warden Facility (BIWF) as he awaits deportation.

BI Commissioner Jaime Morente this warning to foreign fugitives: “We are serious in our drive against undesirable aliens. We will hunt each one down, deport them, and bar them from re-entering the country.”
