Yulo, Obiena get P500k cash reward from Manila gov’t

MANILA, Philippines — Gold medalist gymnast Carlos Yulo and pole vaulter Ernest John Obiena received P500,000  cash incentive from the Manila government on Thursday.

In a statement from Manila Public Information Office, Obiena was given the cash incentive during a ceremony at Manila City Hall while Yulo was awarded in a courtesy call in Manila City Hall.

Obiena earned a spot in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics after clearing 5.81 meters in a tournament in Chiara, Italy.

Yulo defeated seven other competitors to win the men’s floor exercise crown of the FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships at Hans Schleyer Halle in Stuttgart, Germany last Saturday.

Aside from cash rewards, Manila City Council approved a resolution commending Obiena for his victory in the field of pole vaulting.

“[He] stood out among the 6,000 athletes who competed in the 30th Summer Universiade 2019 with 220 medal events in 18 sports categories,” read the resolution.

Obiena was born in Tondo, Manila and graduated from Chiang Kai Shek College and the University of Santo Tomas.

Manila City Council, likewise, passed a resolution congratulating Yulo for being the first Filipino world champion in gymnastics.

Yulo is a native of Leveriza, Malate, Manila and graduated from Aurora Elementary School and Adamson University.
