MANILA, Philippines — The October Orionids meteor shower will light up the night skies starting Thursday, Oct. 17, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) has announced.

Pagasa said the meteor shower will be active from October 17 to 25, with peak nights from October 21 to 22.

The state weather bureau said at its maximum, the shower may reach 15 meteors per hour, which may be observed under “favorable sky conditions,” meaning no or very thin cloud cover.

However, lulls may be observed even during peak nights.

“The Earth is passing through the stream of debris left behind by Comet Halley, the parent comet of the Orionid shower,” Pagasa explained./TSB
