6 hurt as carnival ride collapses in Legazpi City

LEGAZPI CITY — Six people, including three minors, were injured after the amusement ride they were on fell to the ground in this city Saturday night, police said Sunday.

A report from the Legazpi City police said the victims were riding the spinning swing, also called the St. Luke merry mixed up amusement ride, when the incident happened at around 9 p.m. at the traveling carnival at the Landco Business Park in Barangay (village) Capantawan.

The wounded victims were identified as Jasmine Maud, 8; Jester Kurt Badong, 6; Mateth Lopez, 59; Angyeta Balong, 40; Monica Herrera, 22; and Jeric Conde, 13. They were treated at the Bicol Regional Training and Teaching Hospital.

Lt. Col. Aldwin Gamboa, Legazpi police chief, said the victims sustained only minor injuries but will still undergo X-ray tests to determine if they also sustained internal injuries.

Gamboa added that the owner of the traveling amusement park will pay for the victims’ medical expenses. The establishment is an annual visitor in the city from October to December.

Based on initial investigation, the spinning swing had malfunctioned, causing the incident. /je
