Comelec updates number of voter registrants, now reaching more than 4M

MANILA, Philippines — Registrants for the regular and the Sangguniang Kabataan elections have reached 4 million, an updated report from the Commission on Elections (Comelec) showed on Tuesday.

According to the data of the Election and Barangay Affairs Department of Comelec, a total of 4,097,003 applications were received by the poll body nationwide.

“A turnout this high far exceeds the projected number of new registered voters for the year 2020. This is true for the 16 regions in the country,” Comelec Spokesperson James Jimenez said in a statement.

“For the regular applicants, the nationwide average is 152% more than what was statistically expected,” he added.

Of the said number, 2,150,259 of which were female voters while the remaining 1,946,744 is male.

Furthermore, data showed that the number of regular voter registrants, or those aged 18 years and above, has a total of 3,082,396, while Sangguniang Kabataan registrants, or those aged between 15 and 17 years old, numbered at 1,014,607.

The Comelec had set the voter registration for the youth council and barangay elections from Aug. 1 to Sept. 30, 2019. /jpv
