Amid ‘politics’ within PNP, Albayalde says top cop post a ‘God-given destiny’

MANILA, Philippines — After speculating that the controversy on “ninja cops” could be a ploy of someone who wants to be the next leader of the country’s police force, Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Gen. Oscar Albayalde said Monday that securing the much-coveted post is a God-given destiny that cannot be forced.

Citing his remaining 32 days before he retires on November 8, Albayalde said these are “critical times” to whoever will be the next PNP chief as he is expected to soon recommend to President Rodrigo Duterte his preferred successor.

Albayalde earlier speculated whoever might be behind the issue implicating him in the 2013 anti-drug operation in Pampanga wants to tarnish his image so that his endorsement would be a “kiss of death” to the police official he wants to be the next PNP chief.

“I believe ang isang pag-chief PNP is God-given. It’s a destiny. I never dreamed of becoming a chief PNP. I only wanted to be a general,” he said in an interview with reporters after the turnover of supervision of the National Police Training Institute from the Philippine Public Safety College to the PNP at Camp Vicente Lim in Calamba, Laguna.

Albayalde recalled that when Duterte appointed him as PNP chief in April 2018, he was selected to lead the 190,000-strong police force due to his performance as then regional director of the National Capital Region Police Office and “not for anything else.”

“Maraming nagsasabi na kahit anong gawin mo, kapag hindi para sa’yo, hindi para sa’yo kahit manira ka pa ng tao, pumatay ka ng tao. Matalino po ang Diyos at nakikita ng Diyos lahat ‘yan. The [leadership in the] PNP, you can never plan for it,” he said.

(A lot of people say that no matter what you do, if it’s not for you, it will not be yours even if you taint the image of other people or kill a person. God is wise and he sees everything. You can never plan to lead the PNP.)

He explained there is no harm in dreaming high, but added that reaching that dream will still come from God.

He then said there is a purpose why a PNP chief is given the crucial position in securing the land.

“You should know what your purpose is. Ito ‘yung tinatawag na purpose-driven life. Tayo nabuhay dito hindi po parang basta ka binuhay ng Diyos, binigyan ka ng buhay and then wala. Lahat tayo ay may purpose in life whether ikaw ay mahirap, maysakit, kapansanan we have all our purpose in life,” he said.

(You should know what your purpose is. This is what we call purpose-driven life. God gave us life not just for nothing. All of us have a purpose in life, whether you are poor, sick, or someone with a disability.)

“We were never born here by chance. We were given life by God Almighty for a purpose. Lahat po tayo ay may purpose, kahit ‘yan ay ang pinakakamahirap na tayo sa balat ng lupa meron pa rin purpose sa buhay. Hindi ka po dadalhin dito sa mundong ibabaw ng ating Panginoon na wala kang purpose, dahil kung ikaw ay walang purpose in life, you are considered dead,” he said.

(We were never born here by chance. We were given life by God Almighty for a purpose. All of us have a purpose, even if you are the poorest man on earth, you still have a purpose in life. You will not be brought here to the world by God if you don’t have a purpose, because if you don’t have a purpose in life, you are considered dead.) /je
