WATCH: Police delivers baby after stopping speeding car

A police officer went above and beyond the call of service when he unexpectedly delivered a couple’s baby on the side of a road last Tuesday, Oct. 1.

Deputy Robert Pounds stopped the couple’s car for over-speeding around 4:30 a.m. in Florida, United States, as per Collier County Sheriff’s Office’s post on Facebook on the same day.

After following Pounds’ order to stop the car, its driver explained the situation to the officer.

“Officer, you have the right to stop me, I’m not gonna even lie,” the man said in a video the office posted on Facebook on Wednesday, Oct. 2.

He told Pounds he was speeding because there was a “baby coming out,” amid screams from his partner, who was in labor.

Seeing that the baby’s head was already emerging, Pounds immediately called for backup. He then retrieved gloves and a sterile blanket from his vehicle before returning to the passenger’s side of the stopped car, where the woman was positioned.

Pounds seemed unfazed by the turn of events, as he called the man over to assist him with the delivery of the child. Moments after, the cry of a newborn came from the car, and Pounds congratulated the couple for having a baby girl.

Pounds said the mother and newly-born daughter appeared to be fine after the delivery.

Upon the arrival of Pounds’ fellow officers, the mother was treated by ambulatory services before she and her newborn were transported to a hospital.

“This was definitely not your typical traffic stop,” Pounds said. “In my 26 years as a law enforcement officer I never encountered a traffic stop where someone was giving birth.”

He described the event as “exciting” and “a bit nerve-racking,” but he was nonetheless glad to have helped the couple with their newborn. JB
