COTABATO CITY – A students’ excursion turned bloody after the brakes of the vehicle they were riding supposedly malfunctioned, turning the van upside down along the highway in Kalamansig, Sultan Kudarat at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
Two of the 13 students aboard the green Toyota Town Ace driven by Sammy Alimao, 37, died while 11 were wounded, according to the statement from the Kalamansig Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO).
Those who died were Naif Etto, 7; and Jamil Guiampaca, 20; both residents of Bulalo, Sultan Kudarat.
The MDRRMO report said the victims were on their way to Balut Island, particularly to a swimming resort in Barangay Paril, when the brakes of the Toyota they were riding failed as the van was negotiating a downward curve in Sitio Babancao, Barangay Bulalo, Sultan Kudarat town in Maguindanao and sped down towards the left portion of the highway.
Those injured have been immediately sent to Sultan Kudarat district hospital in Kalamansig and later moved to Cotabato Regional and Medical Center. /je
