MANILA, Philippines — Two jail guards were wounded after inmates became rowdy inside the male dorm in Pasay City Jail on Thursday afternoon, the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) said.
In a text message, BJMP spokesperson Jail Chief Insp. Xavier Solda identified the victims as Jail Officer 1 Jeremy Addawe and Jail Officer 1 Jessie Boy Alverio.
Solda said the wounds were not critical, noting that the jail guards were rushed to the hospital.
Solda said the commotion erupted after 12 inmates refused to be transferred to the Metro Manila District Jail. Solda explained that inmates used broken monoblock chairs and parts of water dispenser to hit the jail officers.
Pasay police station said the inmates are members of the gang known as Batang City Jail.
Investigation showed that Benjamin Alejandro, leader of the gang, was summoned by Addawe. But instead of following Addawe, Alejandro ordered his 11 companions to attack the jail officer.
Alverio then responded after Addawe was being mobbed by inmates.
Other jail guards responded to pacify the situation. Jail Officer 1 Aron Bartolome admitted to police that they used “rubber bullets” to control the situation.
