MANILA, Philippines – The construction of a new building for the Philippine Normal University (PNU) has started after school officials and the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) held a groundbreaking ceremony.
According to Secretary Mark Villar, the building would be finished by around June 2020, and it would provide the school in Manila with additional classrooms for students and instructors.
“We will make sure to finish this project by June 2020 to provide a better learning environment for the institution considered as the National Center for Teacher Education,” he said in a statement on Thursday.
The six-story building, which costs P159 million, will be equipped with a roof deck and a basement for the Teachers Education and Heritage Campus Laboratory.
Aside from this, another project within the PNU campus is also underway. The construction of the PNU Convention and Training Center (PNUCTC), which started in September 2018, is expected to be finished by early 2020.
“In his report to Secretary Villar, DPWH NCR Director Ador Canlas said that construction is also on-going for the first phase of the PNU Convention and Training Center (PNUCTC) worth P226 million,” DPWH said.
Described as a public research university, PNU is the country’s primary education institution for aspiring instructors and teachers. According to its website, it was formally opened in 1901 as the Philippine Normal School, by virtue of Act No. 74 of the now-defunct Philippine Commission./ac
