Sixty-two years after finishing college, an 83-year-old man graduated with a master’s degree last Wednesday, Sept. 18, proving that it is never too late to further one’s education.
Sohan Singh Gill obtained a master’s degree in English from the Lovely Professional University in Jalandhar, Punjab in India, as per The Hindustan Times last Saturday, Sept. 21.
“With my will power and God’s Grace, I have finally achieved what I always desired,” Gill was quoted in the report.
Pictures of Gill’s achievement was shared by one Asif Mohammed on Facebook last Saturday.
Gill, from Datta village in Hoshiarpur, Punjab, explained that English has been his favorite language since his childhood and that he was able to master it while he stayed in Kenya in East Africa where he was a teacher. He has always planned obtaining a master’s degree but has been busy with his teaching career.
“I knew all along that I will achieve it, so there was no doubt,” he said. “I have been training IELTS students as well and all have earned good marks.”
The International English Language Testing System or IELTS is an international standardized test of English language proficiency for non-native English language speakers.
He started his journey towards a master’s degree two years ago, when he decided to join a long-distance education course.
Gill graduated from Khalsa College in the urban village of Mahipalpur back in 1957. He took up a teaching course a year after. Ryan Arcadio/NVG
