MANILA, Philippines — A state of calamity was declared in Parañaque City on Monday due to an increase in the number of dengue cases and fatalities this year, according to Mayor Edwin Olivarez.
In a memorandum dated Sept. 18, city health officer Dr. Olga Virtusio said that the city epidemiology surveillance unit had confirmed a dengue epidemic in the city with cases up by 45 percent compared to last year.
From Jan. 1 to Sept. 21, a total of 1,915 dengue cases were recorded in all of the city’s 16 barangays, with four reported deaths.
The villages with the highest number of cases were Barangays San Dionisio (324), San Isidro (276), Moonwalk (223) and San Antonio (211).
Barangays San Dionisio and La Huerta were the most affected areas, with a 46.42 and 40.88 dengue incidence rate per 10,000 population, respectively.
BF Homes, the most populous barangay with 96,758 residents, recorded 165 cases.
