CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY –– A prison officer was killed when the motorcycle he was riding rammed into a road railing in Barangay Lumbia here Sunday night, police said Monday.
Joselito Bascon Jr., 54, a senior jail officer at the city’s correctional facility in Lumbia, was on his way home to Villanueva town, Misamis Oriental, when he lost control of the motorcycle he was driving, according to city police spokesperson Maj. Evan Viñas.
“He probably fell asleep for a few seconds as he miscalculated a blind curve when it happened,” Viñas said.
Due to the impact of the crash, Viñas said Bascon died on the spot. The motorcycle was a total wreck.
It has yet to be determined, however, if the victim was under the influence of liquor during the incident, he said.
Bascon had been working as jail personnel for about 20 years and therefore must have been familiar with the road he traveled every day.
“We’ll leave it up to the investigation of the [Bureau of Jail Management and Penology] if indeed he was drunk that caused his motorcycle to ram into the barrier,” Viñas said.
Jail Senior Supt. Ester Pepito, BJMP-10 regional director, posted on social media how they mourned the untimely death of Bascon.
“We condole with his family and pray for his eternal repose. Rest In Peace, Dear Colleague,” he wrote./lzb
