QC gives financial assistance to hog raisers affected by ASF

MANILA, Philippines – Quezon City government gave cash assistance to hog raisers after pigs were culled to prevent the spread of African Swine Fever (ASF).

Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte handed out the aid worth P3,000 for every culled piglet if the animal was “no longer suckling.”

“Hindi natin sila maaaring pabayaan, lalo na sa panahong kailangan nila ng tulong mula sa lokal na pamahalaan. Naririto kami para tumulong hanggang muli silang makabangon mula sa problemang ito,” Belmonte said in a statement on Wednesday.

Owners of 146 culled pigs in Barangay Bagong Silangan were the first to receive the cash assistance from the local government.

Previously, Belmonte ordered the immediate culling of pigs in Sitio Veterans (Area 5) and Oriole (Area 2) in Barangay Bagong Silangan after 11 dead pigs were tested positive for ASF.

Dr. Anamarie Cabel, head of Quezon City Veterinary Office, advised hog raisers to report cases of sick pigs through 988-4242 loc 8036.

Symptoms of ASF are high fever, nose bleeding and ear hemorrhage, Cabel said./ac
