2 murder convicts freed under GCTA yield in Quezon
LUCENA CITY, Philippines –– Two convicted murderers freed early through the Good Conduct Time Allowance (GCTA) law surrendered to authorities in San Francisco and San Andres towns in Quezon province, police said Tuesday.
One of the freed convicts, a resident of Barangay Don Juan Vercelos, surrendered to the police in San Francisco town Monday afternoon.
According to police, the freed convict was released on July 6, 2017, and was granted freedom under conditional pardon through the Presidential Committee on Bail, Release or Probation of Persons Detained or Convicted of Crimes against National Security and Public Order.
Police said the other freed convict surrendered in San Andres town. The convict is 62 years old and a resident of Barangay Mangero.
The Regional Trial Court in Lucena City sentenced the convict to reclusion perpetua in July 1995. He served his prison term at the Iwahig penal colony in Palawan province.
He was released in March 2019 under the GCTA law.
