DID YOU KNOW: 1st Commonwealth elections held Sept. 16, 1935

After the ratification of the 1935 Constitution and the establishment of the Commonwealth of the Philippines, the first election under the new Constitution was held on Sept. 16, 1935.

Senate President Manuel L. Quezon won by a landslide versus President Emilio Aguinaldo and Bishop Gregorio Aglipay.

But under the 1987 Constitution, elections should be held on the second Monday of May. —Marielle Medina, Inquirer Research
