TAGBILARAN CITY, Bohol –– Four more heinous crime convicts released from prison due to the Good Conduct Time Allowance (GCTA) law surrendered to authorities in Bohol province.
The four released convicts surrendered to police after President Duterte announced that all convicts released through the application of the GCTA law should surrender within 15 days or risk being considered as fugitives.
One of those who surrendered was convicted of rape when he was 18 years old. He spent time at the Leyte Regional Prison in Abuyog, Southern Leyte. He was released last March 21 after spending 12 years behind bars.
Another surrenderer spent time at the Iwahig Prison and Penal Farm in Puerto Princesa City, Palawan after he was convicted for forcible abduction with rape. He was released on February 8, 2019.
Another surrenderer was convicted of murder and was jailed at the Leyte Regional Prison in Abuyog, Southern Leyte.
The fourth surrenderer yielded himself to authorities at the police station of Sikatuna town.
He served his sentence of 40 years at the San Ramon Prison and Penal Farm in Zamboanga City, Zamboanga del Sur, until he was released last July 11.
Police Colonel Jonathan Cabal, acting director of the Bohol Provincial Police Office, said those who surrendered would undergo the same process as any other person convicted of a crime.
He said they would be detained at the Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit in Bohol until an order is given for them to be transferred.
He also asked other convicts to surrender before the deadline.
“For their safety, it is better for them to surrender to the nearest police station. We assure them of their safety,” said Cabal. /lzb/muf
