Classes suspended in 6 Biliran towns due to tropical depression

TACLOBAN CITY –– Classes were suspended in all levels in six out of eight towns in Biliran province due to heavy rains spawned by the tropical depression outside the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR).

Only the towns of Maripipi and Cabucgayan had yet to announce the cancellation of classes as of Wednesday morning.

But the mayors of the towns of Almeria, Culaba, Kawayan, Caibiran, Biliran and Naval, the provincial capital, already issued orders that suspended classes in their localities.

Jaymar Marino of the Naval Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office said they immediately monitored the landslide and flood-prone areas in the town following the heavy rains.

“We are on alert for any possible landslide or flooding incident and so far, we have not monitored such (an) incident,” Marino said in a phone interview.

But Marino said Naval had been experiencing heavy rains and strong winds since the early morning of Wednesday.

In an 11 a.m. bulletin by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration, the tropical depression is expected to enter PAR in 48 hours and it will be named “Marilyn.”/lzb / jpv
