Filipino soldiers led by Col. Maximo Abad defeated American forces led by Devereux Shields in Torrijos town, Marinduque province, in one of the first significant victories of Filipinos during the Philippine-American War.

In 1965, then President Diosdado Macapagal conferred posthumously the Philippine Legion of Honor award with the rank of commander to Abad and his men.

A historical marker was installed in September 1971 to commemorate the battle.

It was declared a national historical site in 1991.
