MANILA, Philippines — A magnitude 4.9 earthquake struck off Calatagan, Batangas on Friday evening, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.
There were no immediate reports of damage or injury from the quake that centered 23 kilometers (km) northwest of Calatagan at 6:32 p.m.
It was tectonic in origin had a depth of 99 km, Phivolcs said in its initial bulletin.
The tremor was felt in the following areas:
- Intensity IV- Puerto Galera, Oriental Mindoro
- Intensity II- Tagaytay City
Phivolcs said no aftershocks are expected from the earthquake.
The Philippines sits on the Pacific “Ring of Fire” where continental plates collide causing frequent seismic and volcanic activity.
