MANILA, Philippines — Typhoon “Liwayway” is no longer directly effecting the country but will continue to enhance the southwest monsoon or “habagat,” bringing rain in parts of Luzon.
As of 3 p.m., Wednesday, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) tracked “Liwayway” 420 kilometers northeast of Basco town in Batanes with maximum sustained winds of 140 kilometers per hour (kph) and gustiness of 170 kph.
It continues to move northeast at a speed of 10 kph and is expected to exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) on Thursday.
Pagasa said Liwayway will bring light to moderate with intermittent heavy rain over Batanes and the Babuyan Group of Islands between Wednesday night and Thursday afternoon.
The “habagat” meanwhile, will bring scattered light to moderate rain with at times heavy rain over the Ilocos Region, the Cordillera Administratuve Region, and the rest of Cagayan Valley.
Due to the southwest monsoon, Pagasa raised a gale warning over several areas in Luzon including Batanes, Calayan, the Babuyan Group of Islands, Cagayan, Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La Union, Pangasinan, Zambales, and Bataan.
Pagasa is also monitoring a low pressure area (LPA) located 860 kilometers east-northeast of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur.
The state weather bureau said there is a possibility that the LPA will intensify into a storm within the next 48 hours.
If it intensifies into a storm, Pagasa said it will be named “Marilyn.” /muf
